Is self-harm just attention-seeking?

Self-harm should be taken seriously, whatever its purpose. A young person may be trying to cope with intense distress, punish themselves, or communicate that they need help. Not everyone who self-harms wants to die, but self-harm is associated with increased suicide risk. nhs.uk

Respond calmly, avoid shame or punishment, and arrange prompt professional assessment. You might say, “I’m glad I know. You are not in trouble. I want to understand what you’ve been dealing with and help you get support.”

Ask directly about suicidal thoughts, and obtain medical attention for injuries when needed. Do not assume that the absence of stated suicidal intent means there is no risk.
