Why does my teen shut down when I try to talk to them?
Silence does not tell you exactly what your teen is feeling. Teens are developing greater independence, and conversations can become harder when they feel pressured to explain themselves or receive advice before they are ready. The CDC recommends listening, acknowledging feelings, and asking before offering solutions. CDC
Try to engage them by saying something like, “I’ve noticed you’ve been quieter lately. You don’t have to explain everything right now, but I’m here. Would you rather I listen or help you think something through?”
Give them room to respond without immediately correcting their perspective. When emotions are running high, pause and return to the conversation later rather than forcing it in that moment.
