Why does my teen have no motivation? Are they just lazy?

Difficulty getting started is not enough information to conclude that a teen is lazy. Depression can affect energy and interest. ADHD can affect organization, sustained attention, time management, and follow-through. Sleep problems, stress, and anxiety can also produce difficulties that resemble ADHD. Try identifying where the task breaks down: understanding the directions, starting, staying focused, or finishing. Breaking a large task into smaller steps can be more useful than repeatedly telling your teen to “try harder,” or “figure it out.” If the problem is persistent or represents a noticeable change, an assessment can help identify the right support. Procrastination alone does not establish ADHD. National Institute of Mental Health

In therapy, I work with teens to understand what gets in the way of starting or following through, then identify manageable next steps. Learn about my approach to therapy or explore support for depression and self-esteem to see how these concerns may fit into our work.
