Is my teen depressed or just going through a phase?

Depression can look like irritability, withdrawal, or losing interest, not just crying or appearing sad. Other signs can include changes in sleep or appetite, low energy, difficulty concentrating, and falling grades. National Institute of Mental Health

Look for a change from your teen’s usual behavior and whether several difficulties are occurring together. Symptoms lasting a few weeks or interfering with everyday life deserve attention. You do not need to wait that long when symptoms are severe or safety is a concern. A pediatrician or mental health professional can help determine what is happening; a website checklist cannot make the diagnosis. National Institute of Mental Health

I do not expect a teen to explain everything perfectly or simply “be more positive.” Our work can begin with understanding what life has been feeling like. Read about my background and approach and explore support for teens experiencing depression.
